Smartie Christmas-Tree Decorations

Not for the clumsy fingered - unless you can borrow a second pair of hands to help with the knots.

Buy bags of mini Smarties. I got 18 and 19 in two bags at £1.97 each, but there was 98p off in Savacentre on 10/11/2003. So each mini box cost just under 9p.

I used to sell these at 25p each, or five for £1.00. They went like hot cakes at a County Day training some years ago. I think you could probably sell them at 30p each or four for £1.00 these days - but that's up to you!

For each decoration, cut a piece of pretty thread 6" (15cm) long. Join the ends with a reef knot. This will be used to hang the decoration on the tree.

Cut a piece of pretty Christmas wrapping paper, 3.5" by 4" (9cm * 10cm). Cut three pieces of magic tape, each about 1/4" (under 1cm) long. Wrap the paper round the mini-box of Smarties, tuck the thread, hiding the reef knot, under one end before securing with a tiny piece of magic tape. The longer length goes all round the box.

Take a piece of 1/5" (0.5cm) wide ribbon, of a contrasting colour to the wrapping paper, 12" (30cm) long. Wrap it around the box. Leaving only enough one end to tie a knot, twist the ribbon through right-angles at the back. Make sure that the front is smooth, before tying a reef knot at the back. Cut off the ends.

The gold wrapping with the red ribbon is shown upside-down, so that you can see the knot on the back.
